ATLANTA, Ga.— Friday night in Atlanta, Ga., at the Bob Heck Softball Complex, Southern Miss Softball (21-22, 5-16 Sun Belt) topped Georgia State (17-34, 6-16 Sun Belt) 4-1 in game one of the three-game series.
Freshman Shelby Allen got things started with a leadoff double, the second of her career. Hannah Borden replaced her record for the most home runs in a season for the program with her tenth home run in the first inning to give Southern Miss a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Georgia State scored their lone run. Center fielder Emily Brown bunted and left fielder Chloe Middlebrooks singled immediately after on the first pitch. Bailee Richardson was up next in the batters box and reached first on a fielding error that allowed Middlebrooks to go up to third and Brown to score. After right fielder Ashton Schroyer walked, Georgia State loaded the bases but could not score, being forced to retire with a fielder's choice for the third out.
In the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles' scoring resumed when Lorna Agren singled to right field on the first pitch and was driven in by Scout Jennings' double. After Jana Lee had walked and Hannah Borden had hit the fourth double of the game, Maria Smith would bring one across home plate in the seventh inning.
Morgan Leinstock (12-14) was the winning pitcher, who gave up just one run and four hits. The Arizona native walked two batters while retiring six others. Only the first three innings of play yielded four hits for the Panthers.
Friday's game is slated for noon at the Bob Heck Softball Complex. Live stats and streaming will be available.
