
Track and Field Sends 11 to East Preliminary

HATTIESBURG, Miss.— The Southern Miss track and field team will be represented by 11 student-athletes at the NCAA East Preliminaries, which will be hosted by North Florida University at the Visit Jax Track & Field Complex in Jacksonville, Fla. The event is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, May 24 to Saturday, May 27.
Head coach Jon Stuart emphasized the high level of competition in the East Region, stating, "In order to advance, you must not only survive but also dominate."
The competition will kick off on Wednesday, with Omar Austin participating in the 400-meter run at 6:25 p.m. CST, followed by Javel Fullerton in the 400-meter hurdles at 7:20 p.m.
On Thursday, Arianna White will begin Southern Miss' participation in the Javelin event at 12:30 p.m., and Safiya John will conclude the day by competing in the 100-meter hurdles at 5:00 p.m.
Zayne Palomino will strive to secure a spot in the outdoor championships through the high jump event, scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m. The following day, Za'isha Fraser will take part in the triple jump at 6 p.m., following the quarterfinals of the four by 400 squad comprising of Trinity Flagler, Jada McDougle, Sav'ia Varnell, and Trinity Benson. Alternates for the squad include Kenia Seals, Destiny Charles, and Safiya John at 5 p.m.
In the previous season, Southern Miss brought 12 athletes to the East preliminaries, and Marquasha Myers and Corvell Todd punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with their standout performances in women's triple jump and men's high jump. Myers achieved a career best in the women's triple jump, while Todd secured a seventh-place finish with a high jump of 7' 3".
