HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss track and field team is on the road to Baton Rouge to compete in the Lloyd Wills Invitational at Bernie Moore Stadium on April 8.Â
"We had a terrific home meet and are looking forward to seeing more growth on the track Saturday from our students", said head coach Jon Stuart.Â
After a strong weekend at their yearly home meet, the Southern Miss Invitational, the Golden Eagles are in good spirits. The Black & Gold won 12 events, and seven additional Golden Eagles placed in the top three.
Three victories were recorded by the Southern Miss track and field team at this meet the year before. Corvell Todd won the high jump contest with a final jump of 2.22m for a meet record. A meet, individual, and school record was established by Sandra Szpott's victory in the 800-meter dash, which had stood since 2005. Szpott clocked in at 2:07.72 and was followed by Smilla Kolbe, whose time of 2:08.13 puts her third on the all-time 800m dash list behind Szpott and Danija Kojic. Carlin Beal and Rebecca DeKay were the first competitors to cross the finish line in the 3000m dash, giving the Black and Gold another top-two finish. Beal completed the race in 10:15.30. DeKay came in second, clocking in at 10:18.
Women's hammer will kick off the field events at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the men's. The running events will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the four by 400 relay will close out the day at 4:55 p.m.
