Softball on the Road to San Marcos

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (16-15, 0-9 Sun Belt) is set to play Texas State (23-14-1, 4-4-1 Sun Belt) in a three-game series in San Marcos, Texas, on April 6–8.

Tuesday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, Southern Miss defeated Nicholls State 8-1 to shake an 11-game losing streak. Claire Sisco's single to center field got the Colonels off to a fast start in the game. Claire Sisco went to second when Erin Krause grounded out to Morgan Leinstock. After that, Alexa Poche doubled to center field to score Sisco. In the bottom of the second, with singles from Caroline Worrell, Nealay McManus, and Hannah Borden, the Golden Eagles scored four runs. After Maria Smith's fly out to left field, the fourth runner of the inning would be brought home. The Black & Gold added insurance runs in the third, fifth, and sixth inning. The Black & Gold were led by Kinsley Gordon, who went 3-3 at the plate, hit her second career home run, and had two RBIs. With her ninth win, Morgan Leinstock pitched seven complete innings. Leinstock gave up just two walks and one run while striking out seven batters.
Scouting the opponentÂ
Texas State enters the weekend with a 23-14-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 in conference play. The Bobcats are led by 23rd-season head coach Ricci Woodard. Woodard has guided the program to a 762-462-1 record, 12 conference championships, and nine Division I Softball NCAA Regional appearances. This past weekend Texas State swept the three-game series against App State in Boone, N.C. Game one saw a 4-3 win, game two with a 3-1 win, and the finale with a 7-2 victory. Utility player Hannah Earls has a .361 batting average and 44 hits to lead the Bobcats. Right behind her is infielder Sara Vanderford who holds the most home runs (6) and RBIs (26). In the circle, pitcher Jessica Mullins posts a 1.85 ERA, a 13-7 record, and 100 strikeouts. Mullins has only issued 36 walks. Texas State was picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll and currently sits at number seven in the conference.Â
Series historyÂ
The encounter in 2006 gives Texas State a 1-0 advantage in the overall series. On February 9, 2006, the Bobcats defeated the Golden Eagles 9-0 at the Hawaii Paradise Classic in Honolulu, HI. There were just five innings, and the Bobcats scored a run in the first three innings, along with three in the fourth and fifth.
