HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss Softball team (20-22, 4-16 Sun Belt) closed their final home series against South Alabama Sunday with a doubleheader. The Golden Eagles fell 4-1 in game one and 11-0 in game two at the Southern Miss Softball Complex on April 30.
How it happened
Game one: South Alabama 4, Southern Miss 1 (8 inn.)
• Leadoff base hit from third baseman Meredith Keel in the top of the first starts the Jags off on the right foot.
• First hit from the Golden Eagles came in the bottom of the second from Jana Lee when she singled to shortstop in the bottom of the second inning but was forced to leave the field when the next three batters struck out swinging.
• Gabby Stagner would get tagged out at home by Hannah Borden to keep the game tied 0-0 in the top of the fourth.
• Hits today came from our leadoff batters.
• Maria Smith walked to first in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough, and we were forced into extras.
• In the top of the eighth, South Alabama gets two runners on after a single and a fielding error and pushes across four more after two doubles and a fielding error to break the scoring stalemate.
• First time we had multiple runners on the bases came in the bottom of the eighth, Scout Jennings reached first on an error, and Maddie Moody came up to pinch hit and sent her second hit of the year through the right side.
• Southern Miss refused the shutout as Hannah Borden reached first on a throwing error bringing Scout Jennings home.
• Morgan Leinstock (11-14) was credited the loss in eight innings of work; she allowed ten hits, struck out four, and issued no walks.
Game two: South Alabama 11, Southern Miss 0 (5 inn.)
• The Jaguars scored first in the first after Meredith Keel walked to first and then stole second and was brought home from Stagner's double through the right side.
• In the top of the second, the Jaguars load the bases and score one after Mackenzie Brasher singled to the left side, bringing Erin McGlothin. They then score five more after two more singles.
• South Alabama recorded seven hits in the first two innings.
• Left fielder Bailey Welch launched a solo home run over the right field wall to push their lead 7-0 in the top of the third.
• First hit from the Black and Gold came in the bottom of the third inning from third baseman Nealy McManus as she singled to left field.
• South Alabama scores in the fourth after Sasha Willems singled to left center.
• Bases loaded for the Jags in the fifth, and Gabby Stagner doubled to right center on the first pitch to add three insurance runs to the board.
• South Alabama scored in every inning of game two, closing the game to a run-rule decision.
• Jana Lee (3-5) started us off in the circle, tagged the loss, allowed seven hits, and issued two walks before Paige Kilgore came in to relieve her in the second inning.
