HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Southern Miss beach volleyball falls in the final day of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament to Coastal Carolina. The Golden Eagles finish the season as the best team in program history, shattering the program win record and setting several individual records along the way.
"It was tough to come up on the short end today," said head coach Shawn Taylor. "I'm really proud of the effort the team gave. You could tell we didn't have the same bounce in our step today, but they continued to play up through the very last point."
Tale of the Tape
(3) Coastal Carolina (25-13, 6-3 Sun Belt) took an early advantage and never looked back in a 5-0 sweep of (6) Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles finish the year 18-24, the best season win total in school history.
Southern Miss, though, did force two pairs to three sets. Vanessa Hurnikova and Ola Chudzik finish the year 20-20 as the Golden Eagles' undisputed top pairing. 20 season wins are the most since Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson paired for 21 in 2021.
Southern Miss finishes third at the Sun Belt Tournament in the conference's inaugural season, marking the furthest any Southern Miss team has gone in the postseason.
Additionally, Hallie Phelan and Taylor Pierce received All-SBC Tournament Honors after going 3-2 on the week and spearheading two major comebacks to keep Southern Miss afloat in yesterday's action.
"Super happy for the seniors," said Taylor. "It would have been great to send them out with a win but as we all know in sports, very few players get to do that. Hallie, Kellie and Kai have been instrumental in helping us push this program to higher levels. It's the deepest run we've made in postseason play and the most wins in program history. One of the points we stress is to leave the program better than they found it and these three have certainly done that."
No. 14 Georgia State ended up claiming the title in a 3-0 win over Coastal Carolina. The Panthers advance to the NCAA National Championship Tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala. next weekend.
