HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss junior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) holed an eagle from 200 yards away on the team's final hole Tuesday to help the Golden Eagles secure a three-way tie for fourth in the Sun Belt Championship after 36 holes of play at Annandale Country Club in Madison, Miss.
The Golden Eagles look to be one of the top four teams following Wednesday's final round of stroke play to advance to the championship round on Thursday. The final day of action, Thursday, will switch to match play to determine the 2023 league champion. The final round gets underway at 8:30 a.m.
Latter finished the day with the team's lowest round of 72 to tie for sixth place in the event with a 142-stroke total.
"I was pleased with the way our guys played on the front side today," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The front nine here have some teeth and is the tougher side in my opinion. However, we struggled coming down the back nine. It's golf, it happens.
"We have a talented team, and we look forward to what tomorrow brings. It will be a shootout to make match play but that is the goal. Make match play and take care of business, man to man."
Graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) added a 74 for the Golden Eagles to hold a 17th-place tie with a 145, while both junior Thongpipat Rattanyanon (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) each carded a 73 for a 147 total and in a 22nd-place tie. Junior Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) added a 74 over his 18 holes for a 149 total and sits in a 38th-place tie.
No. 26 Georgia Southern leads the event after 36 holes with a 573, followed by Louisiana at 578, Troy at 580, with Southern Miss, Texas State and South Alabama all tied for fourth at 581.
