TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-- The Southern Miss track and field team continued their outdoor strides in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the Crimson Tide Invitational April 21-22 with a school record and top-ten showings.Â
While there is definitely space for improvement, we continue to do a lot of things well, according to head coach Jon Stuart. "I'm very proud of all of our athletes who performed well over the weekend, including Smilla, who broke the school record in the 800."
Smilla Kolbe is one of the four Golden Eagle women to take gold in her event. Kolbe's time of 2:06.78 not only posts a personal best but replaces the school record of 2:07.02 set by Sandra Szpott at this exact meet last season.
Both women relay teams earned a first place showing; Trinity Flagler, Jada McDougle, Savi'a Varnell, and Trinity Benson clocked a time of 44.78 in the four by 100-meter relay and Benson, Varnell, Kolbe, and Flagler raced to a 3:43.40 finish in the four by 400-meter relay.Â
Returner Sarah Parnell tagged a personal best and first place showing in the 3000-meter steeple chase recording a time of 10:55.86.Â
The Black and Gold look ahead to their last regular season meet in Starkville, Miss. to participate in the Maroon and White Invitational hosted by Missisippi State April 28-29 before heading to Conway, S.C. for the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships.Â
