Southern Miss Softball Ends Game One of Coastal Series With 4-1 Loss

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss Softball team (19-18, 3-12 Sun Belt) falls 4-1 against the Chanticleers (31-14, 8-8 Sun Belt) Friday night at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. Freshman Shelby Allen refused Raelee Brabham's perfect game with a single in the bottom of the sixth for the first hit of the night from the Black and Gold.Â
Coastal Carolina loaded the bases in the top of the first. Still, they could not capitalize on this opportunity because Delaney Keith flew out to left field, Iyania De Jesus struck out swinging, and first baseman Keirstin Roose popped up to shortstop Maria Smith on the first pitch.Â
In the top of the sixth, the Chanticleers broke the scoreless tie by scoring three runs on a single to left field by Abbey Montoya and a double by Diamond Williams. Shortly after, a freshman center fielder singled to shortstop for the first hit for the Black and Gold, ending Brabham's chances of a perfect game. Â
The Chanticleers added one score in the top of the seventh after catcher Maddy Jennings flew out to right field, scoring Delaney Keith. The Golden Eagles rallied in its half of the seventh inning. Hannah Borden would refuse the Coastal Carolina shutout with a solo home run to left field. She now shares the team lead in home runs with first baseman Natalie Taylor after hitting her sixth of the season. In the seventh, Taylor tried to overtake the Chants with a single through the left side; however, after two outs, pinch-hitter Maddie Moody was unable to outrun her ground out to third base.Â
The Golden Eagles ended the game with one run on three. Morgan Leinstock (10-12) started the night in the circle and was tagged with the loss; she gave up six hits and issued one walk before Jana Lee (3-4) came in to relieve her in the top of the seventh, allowing one run and one hit. Chanticleer pitcher Nicolette Picone entered the seventh inning posting the save.Â
