HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (19-17, 3-11 Sun Belt) will host Coastal Carolina (30-14, 7-8 Sun Belt) for a three-game series on April 21–23 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Last time outÂ
With a 2-1 victory on Sunday, the Southern Miss softball team topped ULM in Monore, Louisiana, claiming its first conference sweep. In the second inning, Southern Miss scored twice thanks to a double from Natalie Taylor to left center and a triple from Scout Jennings to right field that brought Taylor home. Caroline Worrell singled to third base to bring Jennings home. ULM was able to fall behind the Golden Eagles by one run thanks after Warhawks designated player Maddie Nicholls singled through the left side, right fielder Korie Kreps doubled to right center, and second baseman Alexis Chavez hit a sacrifice fly. In the sixth inning, the Warhawks would get one more hit—a single to left center—but a runner wouldn't be able to advance because of a fielder's choice and two groundouts. Maria Smith, a shortstop, took the lead at the plate by going 3-2 on a single and a bunt. Scout Jennings, a sophomore, recorded her third triple and Morgan Leinstock (10-11) struck out three hitters in the circle while issuing one walk.
Scouting the opponentÂ
After their three-game series with Marshall this past weekend, the Chanticleers have a 30-14 overall record and a 7-8 conference record going into this weekend. Coastal won game one 4-3 on Friday but dropped the next two games to give the Thundering Herd the series win. Coach Kelley Green has been at the helm of Coastal Carolina's softball program for 14 years. Diamond Williams, the first baseman, had a.370 batting average, 51 hits, 12 home runs, 40 RBIs, and eight stolen bases to lead the team in many offensive statistics. With a 1.94 ERA and six saves, Nicolette Picone is the Chanticleers' leading pitcher. Raelee Brabham follows behind her, has a 10-7 record, and has struck out 149 batters thus far this year. The pitching staff has a combined 2.36 ERA. As of right now, Coastal Carolina sits sixth in the conference.Â
With games from the 2005 Speedline Invitational and the 2007 Red and Blue Classic, Coastal has a 2-0 series advantage. Southern Miss and Coastal Carolina squared off on March 3, 2007, in Oxford, where the Chanticleers downed the Golden Eagles 7-5. Kristin Pilgrim was brought home by Melissa Prouty's center-field single in the top of the second inning to give Southern Miss the game's opening score. Golden Eagle Lauren Castellvi started the fourth inning with a home drive over left center to tie the game after Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Kristina Sheppard of Coastal Carolina broke a 2-2 tie and gave her team the lead in the fourth inning with a one-out, two-run home run. Unfortunately, the Chanticleers scored three more runs in the fifth inning as Logan James added another home run to try to catch up. Megan Hill's two-run home slam for the Black and Gold in the top of the seventh inning cut the deficit to two, but the next batters, who came up with one out, lined out to the shortstop and flew out to center field.Â
Friday's game is slated for 5 p.m., and Saturday's is set for 2 p.m., followed by a noon game Sunday. Live results and streaming will be available.Â
