Softball Loses Coastal Series 5-3 in Seventh Inning Comeback

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- In a Saturday afternoon matchup against Coastal Carolina (32-14, 9-8 Sun Belt), Southern Miss Softball (19-19, 3-13 Sun Belt) rallied from a five-run deficit to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the seventh. However, the Chanticleers gripped on to dispatch the Black and Gold 5-3.Â
A leadoff single to center field from Maddy Jennings gets the Chanticleers starting on the right foot in the top of the second. Moments later, with bases loaded off of a hit by a pitch and a walk, they pushed across two when left fielder Diamond Williams sent a single through the left side, scoring Libby Pippin and Jennings. Though, the Golden Eagles could stand two before exiting the half of the inning when the last batter flew out to right field.Â
The Black and Gold looked to the sixth hole as Scout Jennings recorded their first shot of the afternoon in the second, reaching first on a bunt. After three scoreless frames, The Chanticleers would add one run in the sixth inning and two to the board in the seventh before Southern Miss fired back. The Golden Eagles brought home three thanks to Paris Ferguson's and Lorna Agren's singles to center field. Unfortunately, hope was lost when a double play and ground out ended the ball game.Â
Paige Kilgore (5-3) threw her fourth complete game of the season and was tagged with the loss after seven innings of work. The Houston, Miss. native issued five walks and allowed eight hits.Â
