Troy Finds 3-0 Win Over Softball

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team ( 15-14, 0-8 Sun Belt) fell 3-0 to Troy (25-9-1, 6-1-1 Sun Belt) , dropping the series Saturday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Left fielder D'Aun Riggs had another successful day at the plate when the Trojans hit a blast in the top of the first on the second pitch. Taylor McKinney would follow Riggs lead with a double down the left field line. Ansley Finch would then help advance the runners on second and third when she slung the third hit of the inning for Riggs to score but Hannah Borden tagged her out at home.Â
In the bottom of the second Lorna Agren singled to right field and stole second going 12-12 for the year but was left stranded after two batters flied out to right field and the third struck out looking.Â
Notably, the Golden Eagles recorded two double plays for the afternoon in the top of the third and top of the fifth getting two runners out at home.Â
Maddie Moody recorded her first hit of the year, a single to right center in the bottom of the sixth, putting the Golden Eagles on the corners, but they were unable to take advantage of this scoring opportunity. Natalie Hurdle later pinch ran for Hannah Borden after her walk Shelby Allen was up to bat and recorded her first collegiate double in the bottom of the seventh.Â
Anslee Finch extended the Trojan lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning by homering to left field on the first pitch. In the seventh inning, Riggs offered a sacrifice fly, allowing Kennedi Gaton to advance to third and Audra Thompson to score. This was the Trojans' final run of the game.
Paige Kilgore (4-1) appeared in the circle for the Golden Eagles. She gave up three runs and walked three. This was her second complete game of the year and first loss.Â
