HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- On Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, Troy (26-9-1, 7-1-1 Sun Belt) defeated Southern Miss softball (15-15, 0-9 Sun Belt) 11-3 to secure the weekend series sweep.
Troy scored first in the top of the first when left fielder D'Aunn Riggs singled on a bunt and advanced to second on a passed ball. Riggs then drove home after second baseman Taylor McKinney doubled to right center. The Trojans pushed across one more when Kelly Horne singled through the left side to return McKinney home.Â
In the bottom of the second, the Golden Eagles scored after a single from Jana Lee and Natalie Taylor. Scout Jennings would offer a sacrifice fly out to center field to drive designated player Jana Lee home.Â
As Taylor McKinney singled through the left side and swiped second in the top of the third, the Trojans had the bases loaded. Anslee Finch hit a single to third base after Libby Baker was given a walk. As Jade Sinness came up to bat and singled to right field, they would benefit again from having three on and no outs and maintain their two-run lead over the Golden Eagles. Soon after, Troy walked in a runner, and Kennedi Gaton's double to center field gave the Trojans a 6-1 lead.Â
Nealy McManus and Maria Smith advanced to first and second base on a Trojan third baseman and left fielder error, allowing the Golden Eagles to load the bases in the bottom of the third. After Hannah Borden advanced to first on a walk, Lorna Agren grounded out to second base to score McManus. Moments later, Jana Lee launched a sacrifice fly to right field for Maria Smith to run home, giving Southern Miss another score.
In the top of the fifth, Troy would add some insurance runs to the scoring column when Taylor McKinney homered out of the park to bring in four, and Jade Sinness singled to left field to bring in one and secure the run-rule victory.Â
Pitchers Jana Lee, Morgan Leinstock, and Paige Kilgore appeared in the circle for Sunday's matchup. The three combined to throw seven innings, retiring four opponents. Leinstock, who took over for Lee in the first inning, pitched 1.1 innings before Kilgore entered to finish the game. Kilgore allowed five runs, while Leinstock allowed four. The defeat was attributed to Jana Lee (3-4).
