HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Four Southern Miss men's golfers shot under par Sunday to lead the Golden Eagles to a first place showing after the opening day of the Tiger Invitational in Opelika, Ala.
The Golden Eagles, which entered the tournament ranked No. 60 by Golfstat.com, lead No. 7 and host Auburn by three strokes after the first 18 holes of play. The teams will play an additional 18 holes in each of the next two days in the 54-hole event.
Junior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) posted a five-under 67 to tie for first at the par 72, 7,289-yard Grand National Lake Course.
Fellow junior Thongpipat Rattanyanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added a 68 to hold a fourth-place, while both graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) and sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a 69 to tie for 69. Junior Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) added a two-over 74 to complete the team's day.
"These are the days you practice and sacrifice so much personal time for," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Golf is such a crazy game filled with ups and downs. But, when everything clicks, boy is it fun!"
Following the Golden Eagles and Auburn in the team scoring, Troy (279), Louisiana Tech (280) and Richmond (282) round out the top five in the 18-team field.
"This is a great start to the tournament for our team," said Brescher. "I am beyond proud of the way our team played today. Anytime you minimize mistakes and keep big numbers off the card, you're bound to have a good team performance. But, we have two more days to go. So, we will stay humble and hungry until the last putt falls Tuesday."
