HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Cameron Clarke shot a second-round, five-under 67 to lead Southern Miss to an individual top 10 showing after the opening day of the All-American Intercollegiate being played in Humble, Texas.
After opening his day with a 75, Clarke rallied with six birdies and a bogey over his final 18 holes of the day to enjoy the Golden Eagles' lowest round of the day and have him sitting in a ninth-place tie with 18 holes left to play Tuesday.
"Hats off to Clarke," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Posting five under on this course is tour quality. He is such a steady player with a ton of veteran experience. It is huge for our team to have someone like Clarke to lean on when we need a clutch performance to pace our team."
Clarke's round helped the Golden Eagles rally as a team as they posted a 289-team score over the final circuit of the day at the par 72, 7,067-yard Golf Club of Houston.
Southern Miss shot a 305 in the opening round but moved up three spots to 15th place after a solid second round to end the day with a 594-team score. No. 36 Louisville led the day with a 10-under 566, followed by No. 17 Kansas State, No. 29 Ole Miss and No. 14 Tennessee at 574 each, while No. 47 LSU rounded out the top five with a 576.
"Our first round was a rough start to the tournament for our team," said Brescher. "However, our guys fought hard in the second round to move up the leaderboard a few spots. We're looking to keep the momentum going from the second round into tomorrow's final round."
Robbie Latter followed Clarke in the individual scoring with a 74 and 73 for a 147 and a 33rd-place tie. Ryan Dupuy added a 77 and a 73 for a 150 total and a 57th-place tie. Teammate Thongpipat Rattanayanon added a 79 and a 76 for a 155 and a 87-place tie, while Tommy Latter posted a pair of 79s for a 158 and a tie for 95th.
Fellow Golden Eagle Bennett Ruby, who is competing as an individual, shot rounds of 74 and 74 for a 147 in the individual only division.
The final round takes place starting at 8 a.m., Tuesday with a shotgun start. Fans can follow the live scoring by clicking here.
