SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Southern Miss (6-4, 1-2 Sun Belt) women's tennis team enjoyed a 5-2 win over Texas State (4-8, 0-3 Sun Belt) on Friday afternoon in San Marcos, Texas. It was the first Sun Belt win in program history for the Golden Eagles after dropping their first two tries.
Alyssa Richter and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan got the Golden Eagles off to a fast start with a 6-3 win on court one in doubles play. Unfortunately, Texas State took care of business on court two and three to clinch the doubles point.
Richter continued to play at a high level, picking up the first point of the day for Southern Miss when she won in singles on court two. The sophomore cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Emily Niers to grab her second win of the season. The Bobcats regained a 2-1 lead after Yazgan had to retire early.
The Golden Eagles then rattled of four-straight wins to pick up the road win. Maddison Ricardo got the rally started with a 7-5, 6-1 win on court five. The momentum continued to court four with Hannah Chambers picking up a 6-3, 6-7(3-7), 6-2 win.
All eyes turned to Zenn Lim on court four – a win and Southern Miss would clinch. Lim took an insane first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (10-8). The freshman then won 6-1 in the second set to grab her eighth win of the season.
Clara Tardivel closed out the day with a three-set win on court three. Tardivel dropped the first set before storming back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The win snapped a two-match losing streak for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss will continue its three-game road swing when it travels to James Madison on Saturday, March 25.
