How it happened
Game one: Southern Miss 4 vs. Yale 1
- Jana Lee started the Golden Eagles off in the circle for Saturday morning's game. Â
- The score broke in the top of the second. Third baseman Lauren Perren singled to right field right before Grayson Vives singled down the right field line for Perren to be in a position to score. They would take advantage of this opportunity when Vives got caught stealing at second for Perren to run on the throw and score.Â
- In the bottom of the second, Lorna Agren tripled to right center for the second of her career but was unable to score when Kinsley Gordon flew out to right field with two outs on the board to close the inning.Â
- In the bottom of the fourth, Natalie Taylor homered to left field for her second of the year to equalize the score 1-1.Â
- With Maria Smith's single to left field to bring in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, she could drive McManus and Gordon home. Dittmer kept the momentum when she singled to right field shortly after leading Maria Smith home 4-1.Â
- After Yale's second baseman struck out swinging with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh, Jana Lee was able to seal the victory.
- Jana Lee (3-0) logged the win for her third complete game of the 2023 season. The Georgia native allowed one run, struck out seven batters, and only allowed two walks.
Game two: Southern Miss 7 vs. UAPB 1
- Alexis Dittmer helped start the scoring early with her leadoff double to left center; with two ducks on the pond, Maria Smith and Hannah Borden reached home 2-0 in the bottom of the first.Â
- Dittmer added to the score 3-0 when Lorna Agren singled to left field with the bases loaded. Moments later, Gordon grounded into a double play as Agren and Lee advanced. Taylor got out on the play after catching a glimpse of home and was unable to up the score to 4-0 in the bottom of the second.
- The first hit from the Golden Lions came at the top of the third when Jada Carhee went to the box and singled to left center on the first pitch, followed by Jazlyn Gomez's single to left field on first pitch. However, the runners remained stranded after Samaria Jackson grounded out to shortstop for the third out.
- Pinch runner Natalie Hurdle scored because of an error on the UAPB center fielder, and Natalie Taylor could reach and advance to third.
- Before ending the fourth, Jana Lee homered to right center for her first of the year and a two-run shot.Â
- The first run from the Golden Lions came in the top of the fifth when Carhee singled up the middle for Elerby to reach home to deny the Southern Miss shutout.Â
- To end the top of the fifth, UAPB lined into a double play.Â
- In the bottom of the sixth, Natalie Taylor homered to left field for her third of the year to cap the Golden Eagle Scoring.Â
- Paige Kilgore (4-0) threw her first career complete game as she picked up the win for USM, allowing only one run and striking out five.Â
