HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- The Southern Miss softball team (12-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) clinched a 3-1 win over Nicholls State (10-6, 0-0 Southland) to close out the Hub City Challenge at the Southern Miss Softball Complex Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles went 4-0 for the weekend.Â
Nicholls tried to attack first when second baseman Erin Krause doubled down the left field line with a 1-0 count and a runner on second. With two outs, Leinstock promptly dispatched the batter in the batter's box when she struck out swinging in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first, Hannah Borden homered to left field for her third of the year to get on the board early.Â
A chance to advance to score came when left fielder Lorna Agren doubled to left center in the bottom of the second but was stranded on second when Kinsley Gordon grounded out to the third base, and Nealy McManus left the plate swinging.Â
Shelby Allen reached first after the Colonel shortstop made a throwing error and then advanced to second with her first career stolen base. Allen could then score thanks to Maria Smith's single to left field. In the bottom of the third, Alexis Dittmer continued the hot streak at the plate by bunting a single that allowed Smith to score.
After Leinstock pitched five scoreless innings, Nicholls got on the board in the top of the sixth after Claire Sisco singled to left center on the first pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was then brought home by Erin Krause's double to left center. The scoring for the afternoon would end here.
The Arizona native (5-1) gave up four hits, one run, no walks, and struck out seven batters.
Hannah Borden homered in the opening inning and went 3-2 in at-bats. Her third of the year ties Natalie Taylor in right field.
