NORFOLK, Va. – DeAndre Pinckney picked up his seventh double-double this season, but it wasn't enough as Old Dominion (18-11, 10-7 SBC) held off a furious Southern Miss (24-6, 13-4 SBC) comeback attempt to win 69-64 in Norfolk, Va.
The Golden Eagles turned in their worst shooting performance of the season, finishing 33.3 percent from the floor. Despite that shooting clip, they did knock down 10 three-pointers. It was the fourth time this season where they hit at least 10 triples.
Felipe Haase battled foul trouble early in the game and head coach Jay Ladner was forced to put his skilled big man on the bench as he picked up two quick fouls. Without Haase in the game, Old Dominion built an 11-point lead as the first half ended was winding down.
Southern Miss, though, was able to capitalize off an 8-0 run to make it a two-point game with 53 seconds left thanks to a Tyler Morman dunk. The Monarchs added one more basket, but Pinckney answered right back to cut the Old Dominion lead to 34-32 at the half.
Southern Miss opened the second half on a 10-3 run to swing the score to a five-point advantage for the road team. Haase and Pinckney each drained three-pointers in that stretch, while Denijay Harris added a pair of layups.
The lead got up to as many as seven with 7:30 left in the game after Donovan Ivory cashed in a three-pointer from the top of the arc. The lead didn't last long as Old Dominion went on a 9-0 run – with a three-plus minute Southern Miss scoring drought – to take a 61-59 lead with 3:16 to go.
Haase then grabbed the lead for Southern Miss after finishing an and-one play under the hoop to make it a two-point advantage. Again, that didn't last long as the Monarchs rattled off an 8-1 run to old on for the 69-64 win.
Haase finished with 18 points to lead all Southern Miss players, while Austin Crowley added 11. With his double-double, Pinckney finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds to record his first double-double since the Georgia State game on Feb. 4.
Ivory finished with nine points of the bench as the Southern Miss bench outscored the Monarchs' 14-7. The Golden Eagles struggled from the free throw line, converting only 14 of their 25 attempts.
The loss moves Southern Miss into a tie for first place in the Sun Belt standings after Marshall won at James Madison. A Southern Miss win at Texas State would guarantee the Golden Eagles at least a share of the regular season championship.
