South Alabama Runs Past Southern Miss in Mobile
2/16/2023 9:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MOBILE, Ala. – The Southern Miss (23-5, 12-3 SBC) men's basketball team fell 85-54 at South Alabama (14-14, 7-8 SBC) on Thursday night. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles that spanned just over a month.
The Jaguars jumped on the Golden Eagles early as the home team opened a seven-point advantage by the first media timeout. Southern Miss turned the ball over 10 times in the first half before finishing with 14 for the game. It was the most since Feb. 2 at Troy – a game Southern Miss won.
South Alabama continued to extend its lead before pulling ahead by 15 at the half. Despite the sloppy play, Southern Miss shot 50 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes. The Jaguars, though, benefited from five three-pointers in the half. Both Isaiah Moore and Kevin Samuel had 10 points to lead all scorers at the break.
Felipe Haase converted an and-one on the first offensive possession of the second half, but that's about as much momentum Southern Miss would garner over the final 20 minutes. South Alabama used a 10-0 run to pull ahead by 28 with 10 minutes to play and the Golden Eagles never answered.
Denijay Harris and Victor Hart` finished with a team-high 10 points, while Harris scored in double figures for the 12th time this season. Hart grabbed four rebounds to lead all Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss will return home on Saturday, Feb. 18 to host Georgia Southern for Senior Day. Tip at Reed Green Coliseum is set for 12 p.m.
