
Softball Faces Southern University for 13th Time in Program History

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- Following their 3-0 polish at the Black & Gold Invitational for their season opener this past weekend, the Southern Miss softball team (3-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) prepares for a midweek matchup against Southern University (0-4, 0-0 SWAC) on Wednesday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Southern Miss takes on Southern for the 13th time in program history. The Golden Eagles lead the series 12-0 against the Lady Jaguars with matches dating back to 2010. The last time these two teams faced off was for the 2022 season on Feb. 16 in a Baton Rouge, La. doubleheader, where the Golden Eagles earned the pair of wins with the scores of 7-4 and 3-1.Â
The victories for the Black & Gold were secured by seniors Hannah Borden and Morgan Leinstock. Leinstock had an outstanding outing in the circle, recording 19 strikeouts while only issuing four walks. Borden had 16 putouts, three hits, five RBIs, and scored once. Along with Maria Smith, a junior, who finished the weekend with three runs, one RBI, and six walks.
The Golden Eagles take on the Lady Jaguars at the Southern Miss Softball Complex at 5 p.m. Live streaming and stats will be available.Â

Williams is a two-time graduate from Western Kentucky University, where she was a four-year letterman on the WKU softball team.

The Lady Jaguars opened the 2023 season at the NFCA Division 1 Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. going 4-0 loss for the weekend.Â

Southern faced opponents Illinois, Howard University, Louisville, Kentucky, and St. John's University.Â
