HATTIESBURG, Miss.--Â The Southern Miss softball team (3-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) earned the doubleheader sweep over Samford (1-2, 0-0 SoCon), winning 3-0 and 3-2 Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles are now off to their first 3-0 start since 2019.
The Golden Eagles now lead the series against Samford 11-10. USM got on the board early in the top of the first in Game 1. Senior Caroline Worrell scored for her first of the year after Jana Lee drove her in on a sac fly. Worrell and Maria Smith scored in the bottom of the fifth after Hannah Borden singled to left center.
Borden's bat continued to stay hot in game two as helped USM grab another quick lead as she sent a 2-run bomb over the fence for the first home run of the 2023 season.Â
The Bulldogs responded in the top of the second when third baseman Grier Bruce singled to center field, reaching second base on a wild pitch. Samford right fielder Taylor Harris doubled to left center to send Bruce to home. Gwyniee Hornibrook followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
Borden helped USM retake the lead with an RBI double in the second inning.Â
This weekend, Morgan Leinstock dominated in the circle, recording 19 strikeouts while only issuing four walks.Â
Paige Kilgore kept the Bulldogs off the base path in the last five innings of game two, after relieving starter Jana Lee. For Borden she had three hits, five RBIs, scored once and had 16 putouts.Â
The Golden Eagles close their season opener with a three-game win streak and prepare for a midweek matchup against Southern University on Wednesday, February 15, at 5 p.m. at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
