HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lady Eagles stun Coastal Carolina in a 17-point come-from-behind 80-68 victory over the Chanticleers. Four Southern Miss players finish in double-figure scoring led by Domonique Davis' 25-point double-double performance.
Tale of the Tape
Southern Miss found themselves out of rhythm and seemingly out of options early in the second quarter as Coastal Carolina cruised to a 20-10 lead after the first and led by as many as 17 in the second frame.
Southern Miss gave away eight possessions in the first minutes, five of the turnovers coming in the final five minutes of the opening quarter.
With their backs against the wall, the Lady Eagles looked to none other than Domonique Davis. Davis entered the frame with four points and the locker room with 14 of her 25 on the day. She spearheaded Southern Miss' second quarter attack to take the game back. Davis became the 70th player to eclipse the 400-point plateau and now owns 415 points on the year.
Southern Miss exploded for a 17-3 run to close out the second quarter. At one point, the Lady Eagles ran themselves back into play with a 10-0 run to make it a seven-point game.
Coastal Carolina's percentage fell from 58.3 percent in the first to 40 percent after the second quarter. Contrast to the Chanticleers fall, Southern Miss upgraded its 4-of-13 showing in the first to finish 11-of-25 in the first half.
The Lady Eagles entered the locker room down 35-33 but the air in Reed Green Coliseum held even more for the Coach Joye Lee-McNelis and her bunch.
The box score for the third quarter proved to painted in Black & Gold as Southern Miss topped its 23-point second quarter with a 29-point third. Southern Miss took the lead on a two-point basket from Davis and never looked back after that 39-38 line.
Morgan Dillard (Sanford, Fla. // Seminole HS) enjoyed a career day in multiple categories. The sophomore put six balls in the hoop along with two free throws to set a new career-high of 14 points.
Dillard truly shined defensively, swiping six of the Lady Eagles 10 steals on 25 minutes of play. Overall, she tied her career-high rebounding mark with five and set new marks in points, steals, field goals made and field goals attempted.
She grabbed three steals and six points in the third quarter alone to compliment Melyia Grayson's (Hattiesburg, Miss. // Hattiesburg HS) and Davis' seven in the third frame.
Southern Miss laid off the defense in the final ten minutes and sailed to an 80-68 final. The fourscore mark is Southern Miss' best since their season opening 81 against William Carey and the most in a win against a conference foe since Jan. 11, 2020 against UTSA.
Davis finished the day with 25 points and 10 rebounds to notch her third career double-double as a Lady Eagle.
