LAKE CHARLES, La. – A 67-48 win from the hands of McNeese (9-2, 0-0 Southland) snapped Southern Miss' three-game winning streak on Wednesday night in Lake Charles. The Golden Eagles (5-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) – who fell to 2-2 on the road – got a career-high 14 rebounds out of Tegra Izay.
Donovan Ivory and Victor Hart paced Southern Miss in the scoring column with 12 points each. The Golden Eagles shot just 27.9 percent from the floor and 28 percent from three-point land for the game. The shooting performance was the worst of the season after they rattled off a pair of 50 percent shooting clips during the winning streak.
McNeese ripped off an 18-4 run that broke a 10-10 tie shortly into the game. The Cowboy punch flushed out any momentum Southern Miss had following an Ivory three-pointer prior to the run. The Cowboys' lead peaked at 16 in the first half before Southern Miss managed to get it to 12 at the break.
The 12-point deficit quickly dwindled to seven as Hart took matters into his own hands with a 7-2 run. His third bucket in the run came courtesy of a baseline dunk that silenced the Cowboy crowd. Victor Iwuakor then cut it to a six-point game after he hammered home a dunk with 14:49 to go in the game.
Iwuakor's dunk was as close as Southern Miss would get to catching McNeese in Will Wade's return to the bench. DJ Richards hit six three-pointers to lead all scorers with 24 points. The Cowboys shot 24 percent from the floor for the game despite the Golden Eagles holding them to a 34.5 percent clip in the second half.
McNeese went to the free throw line 17 times compared to Southern Miss' four attempts. Izay's 14 rebounds were the most since Denijay Harris had 14 against Georgia Southern last season. Southern Miss grabbed 44 rebounds as a team, its most against a Division I opponent this season.
The Golden Eagles continue their four-game road trip on Monday as they travel to Lamar. Tip-off in Beaumont, Texas is slated for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
