LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss cruised to a 96-44 win over Mississippi College in exhibition play at Reed Green Coliseum last Wednesday, Nov. 1. The Lady Eagles shot an overall 54.5 percent from the floor (36-of-66) and outrebounding the Choctaws 47-25. Southern Miss scored first 20 seconds into the game and never relinquished the lead. In true Joye Lee-McNelis basketball style, the Lady Eagles outscored MC 52-18 in the paint.
STORYLINES
Southern Miss (0-0) has reloaded and is looking to defend its Sun Belt title from last season.
Senior guard Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) stands at 999 career points and 957 as a Lady Eagle. The 2023-24 season should prove to be historic for the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year, who scored 541 points last year, as she climbs the ladder of Lady Eagle 1,000-point scorers.
The only thing dampening Davis' meteoric rise is the depth on the Lady Eagle roster, best shown in the exhibition game last week. True freshman Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) finished as the game's leading scorer with 16 points and an effective 6-of-9 shooting performance on 29 minutes of play. Southern Miss' star-studded roster also includes Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.), Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.), Noelani Cornfield (Gowanda, N.Y.) and more, all capable of scoring from any angle.
SCOUTING WILLIAM CAREY
The Lady Crusaders (3-0) have started the 2023-24 season strong, posting three-straight wins over fellow NAIA competition. Four Lady Crusaders (Lauren Rowley, Shaneal Corpuz, Rose Warren and Kolten Blakeney) are averaging double-figures so far, led by Rowley's 18.3 points per game. Blakeney anchors William Carey's rebounding efforts, averaging 9.0 per contest so far.
William Carey finished last season 18-9 (11-7 Southern States) and its 3-0 start is the squad's best since 2008-09.
SERIES HISTORY
Southern Miss leads the overall series 19-1 and currently holds an 18-game win streak dating back to Jan. 29, 1987. The two teams first met for a two-game exchange in 1977-78 with Southern Miss winning the first matchup 79-68 on Dec. 5, 1977, in Kay James' first win at Reed Green Coliseum. William Carey got its revenge—and only win in the series—a few weeks later on Jan. 19, 1978, via an 84-79 win at Clinton Gymnasium. The two did not play for another decade before playing four games over two seasons in the late 1980s.
In 2008, head coach Joye Lee-McNelis made the meeting an almost-annual occurrence. Southern Miss and William Carey have played each other 15 of the last 16 seasons including tomorrow's matchup. McNelis has never lost to William Carey, holding a 14-0 record over the Lady Crusaders. Southern Miss is 8-0 against Carey on Mondays and 6-0 under McNelis.
