HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss celebrates its annual Salute to Service contest when Golden Eagle football welcomes ULM to Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium Saturday at 3 p.m. for a Sun Belt Conference tilt.
During the day, Spirit Park opens at 10 a.m. and live music from JT McCaffrey starts at noon. Eagle walk will take place at 12:45 p.m. with military vehicles present in Eagle Walk.
All active and veterans will receive complimentary tickets for Saturday's game with a valid military ID. There will also be an oath of enlistment during the halftime show along with military branches song performed by the Pride.
Tickets for the game are still available by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, while the game will be shown on ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles and Warhawks play for the eighth time in their history, dating back to the 1982 season.
Southern Miss holds a 5-2 overall record over ULM including a 20-10 decision a year ago in Monroe, in which Frank Gore, Jr., rushed for a game-high 199 yards to help the Golden Eagles become bowl eligible for the first time since 2019.
This will be the sixth time the two schools have played in Hattiesburg as the Golden Eagles hold a 3-2 mark in those games. The Warhawks won 21-20 the time the two teams met at The Rock on Sept. 8, 2018, in a non-conference tilt.
Gore, Jr., returns for this game tomorrow as the team's top running back with 681 yards on the ground as he is still on pace to reach the 1,000-yard plateau. Gore, Jr., who ranked fifth on the school's all-time rushing leader chart with 3,572 yards, needs just 12 to tie Derrick Nix (1998, 2000-22) for fourth and 23 to tie Ben Garry (1974-77) for third. He also looks to become the fifth Golden Eagle running back to reach 1,000 yards for a season in multiple years.
Quarterback Billy Wiles has thrown for 1,546 yards over his eight starts in 2023, having completed 53.7 percent of his passes (132-of-246). He now has eight touchdowns with just five interceptions this year.
The trio of Latreal Jones, Ti Mims and Jakarius Caston continue to lead things in the receiving department for the Golden Eagles. Both Jones and Mims lead the squad with 30 catches each, while Caston is next at 24. Jones has a season-high 412 receiving yards, followed by 354 for Mims and 368 for Caston. All three players have a 100-yard receiving game to their credit this season.
On the defensive side, Dylan Lawrence continues to lead Southern Miss in tackles with 53, while Jay Stanley is next with 39, to go along with a three-best three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Linebackers Swayze Bozeman and Hayes Maples each have 34 and 33 tackles respectively, while Jalil Clemons is at 26.
The Golden Eagles (1-7, 0-5) look to snap a current seven-game losing streak versus the Warhawks (2-6, 0-5), who have dropped five in a row.
Following the ULM contest, it will be a short week for Southern Miss as they travel to Lafayette for a Thursday night 6:30 p.m. affair with Louisiana. The game can be seen on ESPNU.
