ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Despite career performances from Tegra Izay and Victor Hart, the Southern Miss (2-3, 0-0 SBC) men's basketball team fell 74-67 to Cal State Fullerton (2-3, 0-0 Big West) at the Jacksonville Classic on Monday morning.
Hart exploded for a career-high 23 points – his previous career-high was 18 and came in Sunday's game against Utah Valley. Izay finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds to secure his first collegiate double-double.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half before going on a 20-3 run to cut the Titan advantage to two with 4:42 to play in the game. A Hart slam started the run, which included seven points from Izay.
Right as Southern Miss was getting ready to strike again, Grayson Carper delivered an NBA-length three-pointer as the shot clock expired to make it a seven-point game with two minutes to play. The basket delivered a punch to the Golden Eagles as Cal State Fullerton took an eight-point lead moments later.
Donovan Ivory scored a late basket to cut the Fullerton lead to five, but it was too late as the Golden Eagles ran out of time. The loss was Southern Miss' first back-to-back loss since the 2020-21 season.
The Titans shot 52.3 percent from the floor for the game and hit six three-pointers on 14 attempts. On the flip, Southern Miss connected at a 40 percent clip. Mo Arnold and Hart each had two of the six three-pointers for the Golden Eagles – Crowley and Ivory had the other two.
Crowley finished with 15 points and went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Ivory finished with 12 points and has now scored 10-plus points in every game this season. Arnold finished with six points as only five different Golden Eagles found the scoring column.
