AKRON, Ohio – Greg Tribble scored nine of Akron's 17 straight points over the final 3:33 to lift the Zips to a 72-54 victory Friday night at the James A. Rhodes Arena as part of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge.
Nate Johnson scored a team-high 17 points, while Tribble and Enrique Freeman added 13 points each for the Zips as they improved to 2-0 on the year.
The Golden Eagles, who dropped their first game of the year to fall to 1-1, got 17 points from Austin Crowley and 10 from Donovan Ivory.
After an opening half that saw five ties and five lead changes and the Golden Eagles leading by as many as seven early in the first half, Freeman hit a bucket 10 seconds left before the end of half to give the Zips a 33-31 advantage.
The Zips built that lead to as much as 14 at 50-36 following a Tribble layup with 10:19, but the Golden Eagles came roaring back. Southern Miss then scored 18 of the next 23 points in the contest, including seven-straight from Mo Arnold at one point and the Golden Eagles trailed 55-54 following a Crowley three-pointer with 4:14 to play.
The Golden Eagles, though, failed to score the remainder of the game and the momentum of the game seemed to switch with 3:53 left when Tegra Izay, who added six points, fouled out of the contest for the visitors. After that point, Southern Miss committed four fouls, turned the ball over three times and missed its final four shots.
Southern Miss returns home Wednesday, Nov. 15, when they play host to Xavier (Louisiana). Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum.
