HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss renews a rivalry with an old conference foe when the Golden Eagles entertain Old Dominion, Saturday, Oct. 7, for homecoming at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The game can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. Tickets are available by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com.
The Golden Eagles and Monarchs, now members of the Sun Belt Conference, met twice during their days as members of Conference USA. The teams met in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
Southern Miss won the initial meeting in Hattiesburg during the 2015 campaign behind 161 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground by Jalen Richard. The Golden Eagles traveled to Norfolk the following season and fell 51-35 as quarterback Nick Mullens did not play with an injury and the visitors turned the ball over on its first three possessions.
The two teams now meet up as the October portion of the slate begins. The Golden Eagles (1-4 overall, 0-2 Sun Belt) look to snap a four-game losing streak after falling at home to Texas State 50-36 last weekend. ODU lost a tough road league tilt at Marshall (2-3, 1-1) 41-35.
Billy Wiles gets the nod at quarterback for Southern Miss as he makes his sixth consecutive start for the Golden Eagles and is the first player to do that for Southern Miss since Jack Abraham started all 13 games during the 2019 campaign. Wiles has thrown for 1,088 yards on 92-of-174 throws with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
On the ground, the duo of Frank Gore, Jr., and Dreke Clark have spearheaded the rushing attack. Gore, Jr., leads the way with 331 yards and four rushing scores, while Clark has 317 yards and a pair of running scores.
Another duo, Latreal Jones and Jakarius Caston, pace the Southern Miss receivers. Jones owns 21 catches for 301 yards, after collecting his first 100-yard receiving game last weekend against Texas State. Caston now has 16 grabs for 283 yards and a team-best three touchdown receptions.
Dylan Lawrence leads the defense with 35 tackles (12 solos), while Jay Stanley is next at 29 that also includes two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Defensive lineman Jalen Williams ranks third on the team in tackles with 19.
The Golden Eagles have won 16 of their last 21 homecoming affairs.
Following the ODU contest, Southern Miss does not play again until they travel to Mobile to face South Alabama for a Oct. 16, Tuesday night game. That tilt gets underway at 6:30 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN2.
