HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss football finishes the month of October with its second-straight road trip as they travel to face Sun Belt Conference foe App State, Saturday, in a 2:30 p.m. CT contest in Boone, N.C.
The game can be seen on ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The tilt marks just the third meeting between the schools and the first in Boone since the inception of the series.
The Golden Eagles captured the first contest between the two schools, 7-0, Dec. 1, 1937, in a game played in Gulfport, Miss. The two teams played that game as a fundraiser for the Gulfport Men's Business Club's doll and toy drive. App State's coach at the time, Kidd Brewer, once coached at Gulfport High School.
In the last meeting between the two schools, Dasman McCullum blocked a late PAT to preserve the 21-20 victory over the Mountaineers during the 2014 season in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss had its only scheduled game at App State, which was set for Sept. 15, 2018, canceled due to Hurricane Florence.
The Golden Eagles travel to the state of North Carolina for the first time since 2018, dropping a 20-17 decision to Charlotte and look to snap a current six-game losing streak in the process.
App State is one of five schools from the state of North Carolina that Southern Miss has played in its history. Southern Miss holds a combined 37-19 record against those foes (East Carolina 27-12; NC State 5-5; Charlotte 2-2; App State 2-0; Elon 1-0).
Frank Gore, Jr., continues to lead the ground game for the Golden Eagles as he has posted 434 yards on the ground this season with a team-best four rushing scores. He has amassed 3,325 career rushing yards which ranks fifth on the Golden Eagle career chart.

As for quarterback, Billy Wiles has started all seven games and converted 53.2 percent of his pass attempts (109-205) with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
On defense, Dylan Lawrence continues to lead the way for Southern Miss with 45 tackles, including one sack, while Jay Stanly is next at 34 stops, which also includes two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Stanley's three takeaways are the most for the Golden Eagles this season. He missed last week's game with an injury.
Place kicker Andrew Stein continues to have an outstanding season for the Golden Eagles as he has converted 14-of-16 field goal attempts in 2023 – making at least one try in each game – to go along with 13-of-14 made extra points.
Following the App State game, Southern Miss returns home next Saturday, Nov. 4, for a 3 p.m., league contest against ULM.
