HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's basketball team made quick work of Delta State in Tuesday's exhibition game at Reed Green Coliseum, winning 101-65.
The Golden Eagles hit the Statesmen with a balanced scoring attack as all 12 players scored a point, including nine in the first half. Victor Hart led all scorers with 20 points and added a game-best rebounds.
"[Victor Hart] was the first thing John Cox asked about down on the radio," said head coach Jay Ladner. "I'll be honest with you, I'm not that surprised, and I think that he can get a lot better. He got 20 and so forth, but I saw some of those flashes last year.
"In our spring meeting I told him I thought he's got a chance to be an all-league player. You know, I'm not sure what he saw, but I told him I see that. That was our way of challenging him... He was our most athletic big last year and would show signs of really doing good things."
Southern Miss shot 49.3 percent from the floor – there were only nine games last year where the Golden Eagles shot better from the floor than tonight. The Golden Eagles hit 19 field goals in the second half and shot 50.0 percent to close the game. Meanwhile, Delta State connected on 18 buckets in the second half to shoot 54.5 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Austin Crowley went for 17 points on 4-for-12 shooting from the floor. Crowley's performance was highlighted with three 3-pointers and an empathic dunk in the first half.
Donovan Ivory, Cobie Montgomery, and Tegra Izay all added double-figure scoring nights. Ivory finished with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and connected on two 3-point attempts. A post presence was felt as Izay, a 7-foot center, filled up the lane with size as he went for 11 points and five rebounds. Montgomery added 11 points in his Reed Green Coliseum debut after sitting out last season due to transfer policies.
