HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Southern Miss (7-12, 2-6 Sun Belt) fought throughout its second match against Texas State (12-7, 5-3 Sun Belt) Saturday in the Wellness Center, but the Bobcats completed comebacks in every set to take the match in straight sets (24-26, 24-26, 22-25).
Southern Miss led by four or more points in each set, but the Bobcats orchestrated key runs late in the sets to rally from behind. While the Golden Eagles limited Texas State to hit at just .150 in the match, the Bobcats also held Southern Miss under that percentage at a .123 clip.
Mirroring Friday's start, junior Mia Wesley got the Southern Miss attack going in the first set, notching six kills in the period. The Golden Eagles jumped ahead on a 6-0 run and eventually took a seven-point lead at 13-6. However, Texas State tied the game at 22 apiece, and after a couple of exchanges, the Bobcats broke the game open with two straight points to win 26-24.
A block by freshman Torrey Tkach and junior Cara Atkinson put Southern Miss ahead at the beginning of the second set on the way to a Golden Eagle run. Texas State reached 15 first, though, and grad student Aysu Dalogullari sparked a 3-0 run with a kill, followed by Wesley retaking the lead with back-to-back kills at 22-20.
While the second set seemed in grasp for the Golden Eagles, Texas State's Samantha Wunsch notched three kills to retake the set at 26-24.Â
Southern Miss remained strong to open the third set with a 6-0 lead. After leading by seven at 15 points, the Bobcats began their comeback, eventually tying the game at 19. With momentum, Texas State closed out the game with three consecutive points at 25-22.
Wesley again led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills and also added 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. In her first game back in the starting lineup since playing at Troy, Dalogullari followed with nine kills and nine digs.Â
Setter Ella Voorhees tallied 31 assists, and defensively, libero Megan Harris led the team with 16 digs.
With the loss, Southern Miss fell in consecutive matches at home for the first time since nearly two years ago when the UTEP Miners beat the Golden Eagles on Oct. 15-16, 2021.
