Lady Eagle Road Swing Continues to Marshall
1/20/2023 5:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball continues its road jaunt through the Appalachian Mountains with a Saturday afternoon meeting against Marshall. Tipoff from the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va. is set for Noon CST (1 p.m. EST).
Last Time Out
Southern Miss (13-5, 6-1 Sun Belt) claimed its third-straight victory and eighth out of the last nine in a 75-68 shootout against App State. Melyia Grayson recorded her first double-double of the year with a 26-point, 15-rebound stat line pacing the Lady Eagles and Mountaineers in both categories.
In a clash of styles, Southern Miss outscored App 42-26 in the paint and won the rebounding battle 49-28.
Noting the Lady Eagles
McNelis' squad stands at 6-1 in conference play and tied for first with James Madison and Troy. The 6-1 start ties the best start under Joye Lee-McNelis set in 2008-09.
Southern Miss' offensive woes can largely be attributed to an early season of tough teams and an ability to dominate teams in conference play. Fourth Lady Eagle opponents played this year are in the top 50 scoring defenses and another two come in the top 60.
Southern Miss' mark of 58.2 points allowed per game is 57th in the nation.
The Marshall Series
Friendly rivals of Conference USA since 2005-06, the Thundering Herd and Lady Eagles have squared off 27 times since first meeting in 2006.
Southern Miss holds a 16-11 advantage over the Herd but Marshall has claimed the last three contests, dating back to 2020.
The two teams played at least once a year since 2006, excluding the 2020-21 season due to travel limitations. Prior to 2013-14, the two played at least twice a year.
Southern Miss is just 5-7 in the Cam Henderson Center and has not won in Huntington since 2019, which is the last win for Southern Miss in the series.
Scouting the Thundering Herd
Marshall (9-9, 2-5 Sun Belt) enters the game riding a five-game losing streak in conference play and fresh off an 87-77 loss to Troy.
Tony Kemper's squad returns no points from last year's game against the Lady Eagles and runs through Roshala Scott and Abby Beeman, both new faces in the Herd's lineup. Scott arrived in Huntington via Southeast Missouri State this past summer and Beeman via Division II Shepard.
Scott leads MU with 18.2 points per game and Beeman follows closely with 13.7. Beeman also leads the group in rebounding, pulling down 122 boards this season.
Follow Along
The Voice of the Lady Eagles, Jason Baker, will be on the call live from the Cam Henderson Center with the Lady Eagle Basketball pregame show beginning at 11:30 a.m. CST (12:30 p.m. EST).
The game can also be found on ESPN+ with Mark Martin and Jayden Taylor as the broadcast talent.
