HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) shot a 36-hole, nine-under 131, to tie for the individual lead while helping Southern Miss to a second-place showing in the team standings Monday after the opening day of the Old Town Collegiate in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The event, which is being played at the par 70, 6,966-yard Old Town Club, concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday. Southern Miss will start teeing off at 7:25 a.m. CT.
Clarke shot rounds of 64 and 67 to tie with Furman's Will Morlan for the individual lead. The transfer for the Golden Eagles provided the team's lone eagle of the day of which 15 total were shot among the 12-team field. After bogeying his first hole of the day, Clarke posted his eagle and five birdies in the opening round to tie for the best round (6-under) by a Golden Eagle this fall.
Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added a team-low second round with a score of 66, following an earlier 67, to end his day with a 133 for third place.
"Clarke and Thongpipat are playing some stellar golf," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The way they kept our team going is fantastic. We're looking forward to giving them a little help tomorrow."
The team finished with rounds of 270 and 274 to end its day at 574, just five strokes behind leader Kansas State, while also enjoying a four-stroke lead on Furman and are five strokes up of Penn State.
"We got off to a slow start in round one today," said Brescher. "But our guys showed their maturity and stayed patient to get hot in the later part of round one."
Sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) posted rounds of 69 and 73 for a two-over 142 and sits in a 31st-place tie. Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) posted scores of 70 and 75 for a 145 and a 44th-place tie, while Tommy Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) added rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 and a 54th-place tie in his first collegiate event.
"We didn't have the best of finishes coming in for round two," said Brescher. "That's not the end of the world, because we're in the hunt with a chance to win. Nothing better than being in the mix with a chance to win."
