NATCHITOCHES, La.—The Southern Miss women's tennis team dominated the fall competition at the Women's Care Lady Demon Fall Invite in Natchitoches, La. The tournament was hosted by Northwestern State, as it began on Friday, Sept. 16, and will continue through Saturday, Sep. 17.
"The team made a dominant start to the Fall season with four girls making the singles finals. Sophomores Clara Tardivel, Alyssa Richter, and Maddison Ricardo showed improvement within two weeks of practice to make their first finals. Freshman Hannah Chambers settled in quickly and made her first final. Two doubles pairs are in the semifinals tomorrow. Suhana/Clara picked up a good win against Sunbelt team Louisiana Lafayette 6-3. Overall, the team showed good fighting spirit and competed well," said Head Coach Piyanart Engineer.
Shevita Aulana, Hannah Chambers, Suhana Das, Maddison Ricardo, Alyssa Richter, Clara Tardivel, and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan participated in a combination of singles and doubles matches to open the tournament in Louisiana.
Newcomer Ricardo won both of her singles matches in the Grey Singles Draw, defeating Ksenia Reznitskaya of New Orleans in the first round, and advanced to the finals with a victory over Carolina Chiatti of Stephen F. Austin. The Gold Coast, Australia native, takes on Laure Line Monnoyer of Louisiana tomorrow in the finals.
Chambers made her freshman debut, winning both of her singles matches in the Orange Singles Draw, defeating Yeva Kononovych of Tyler Junior College in the first and Didi Bredberg-Canizares of UNO in the second, to forge her way to the finals. She faces Angeligue Berrat of ULL in the finals tomorrow.
Returner Yazgan had to retire due to a shoulder injury in the Purple Singles Draw after loss in two matches. Das opened her fall season with a win in the first round over Ana Kouchnavera of UNO in three sets but dropped a match to Alice Klinteby of ULM in the second round. Das will compete for the third-place title against Luci Raquin of ULL.
