
Southern Miss Advances to Final Game of Hattiesburg Regional with Two Wins Sunday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss rode a Big Rig and a Storm to put themselves in a winner take all matchup Monday afternoon at the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional.
Graduate transfer right-handed pitcher Hunter Riggins, nicknamed Big Rig and one of the top three Golden Eagle starting pitchers, threw nine solid frames as the Golden Eagles upended Kennesaw State in an elimination game earlier Sunday 4-3 in 10 innings. It was the second consecutive game of extra innings for the Golden Eagles as they did that for the first time since back-to-back victories against Marshall in March of 2017.
In the nightcap, sophomore left-hander Justin Storm limited LSU to two hits and walk over the final five innings to get a victory in an 8-4 decision to force the Monday winner take all contest with the Tigers (40-21). Game time is set for 3 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as watch on ESPN+.
With the game tied at 4-4 against LSU, Storm came in with one runner on in the fifth after Isaiah Rhodes hit a batter to open the frame. Storm proceeded to retire the next six batters he faced and gave up just two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch down the stretch.
His inning and strikeout totals were season highs as he was credited with a victory and improved to 3-0 on the year.
The Golden Eagles went ahead for good in the sixth with a three-run sixth frame. Danny Lynch opened the stanza with a walk. After a strikeout, Gabe Montenegro walked, and brother Rodrigo, singled to load the bases. A wild pitch by Tiger reliever Eric Reyzelman gave the Golden Eagles the lead. Dustin Dickerson then knocked in a run with a single and Southern Miss (46-17) added its final run on a Reyzelman balk.
Southern Miss completed its scoring with a Carson Paetow home run to right, a solo shot, for his 15th of the year.
The third of six LSU pitchers, Riley Cooper, suffered the loss by allowing a run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 2 2/3 to fall to 4-3.
Against Kennesaw State in the opener, the Golden Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the fourth as the Owls (36-28) scored a pair of unearned runs. The Golden Eagles tied game in the sixth. With one out, Gabe Montenegro walked and Blake Johnson was hit by a pitch. Dustin Dickerson drove in the first run on a bases-load single through the right side. Reece Ewing then hit into a fielder's choice and on a throw down to first was hit in the back allowing a run to score to tie the game.
The teams traded runs in the ninth. Riggins gave up a double which was immediately followed by an RBI single from Mason Jones. Riggins finished the game allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. Christopher Sargent led off the frame with a double to left. After a groundout to advance Sargent to third, Danny Lynch's dribbler through the left side scored Sargent to tie the score at 3-3.
Tyler Stuart entered in the 10th for the Golden Eagles and retired all three batters with a couple of strikeouts which earned him the win and improved his record to 3-0.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Carson Paetow reached on a one-out throwing error by the KSU third baseman which put him at second base. After an intentional walk to Dickerson and a walk to Ewing Sargent singled in Paetow for the Golden Eagles fourth walk-off victory of the year and 24th walk-off victory.
KSU reliever Luke Tolbert went the final frame for the Owls and allowed an unearned run on a hit with two walks and two strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 4-3.
