DALLAS -- Southern Miss women's tennis student-athlete Ebru Zeynep Yazgan has been named to the Conference USA All Singles Second-Team, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Yazgan played in 15 matches for the Black & Gold this season and was a key contributor throughout the 2022 campaign. The senior from Izmir, Turkey played at the No. 1 position for the Golden Eagles in every match she appeared in and compiled a 7-4 record in singles competition.
Southern Miss benefited from Yazgan's strong play on court one, as the Golden Eagles finished the year with a 13-5 record, which included wins over Conference USA opponents, UTSA and LA Tech. Yazgan recorded a crucial win over LA Tech's Leonie Schuknecht en route to Southern Miss' 4-1 win over the Lady Techsters.
Head coach Steve Schram relied on Yazgan to lead the charge for the Golden Eagles at the No. 1 spot and spoke highly of her performances during the 2022 season.
"Ebru stepped up in a big way by playing at the No. 1 spot, and she was able to defeat very solid opponents," Schram said. "Playing at the number one position is always very challenging, but I am very proud of the contributions she made to this team."
Yazgan helped the Golden Eagles to an undefeated, 8-0 record at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex this season. At home, she picked up five wins as she aided the Golden Eagles to their 30-match undefeated streak, which dates back to 2018.
"It is an honor for Ebru to be recognized by the coaches of the conference," Schram said. "I am proud of her efforts, not only this season but throughout her overall career as a Golden Eagle."
Yazgan joins Sarah Medik and Suhana Das as student-athletes who have earned honors from Conference USA. Medik was named to the 2020 All-Freshman Team, while Das was honored last year as a Second-Team Doubles Team member.
