HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) shot a three-under 69 and senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added a 71 to help the Southern Miss men's golf team move up two spots into second place following the second day of action at the Conference USA Championships in Texarkana, Ark.
Through 36 holes in the 54-hole tournament, the Golden Eagles are sitting five strokes under par with a team score of 571, trailing Florida Atlantic (567) by four strokes in the team event. The Golden Eagles are also six strokes ahead of UTSA (577), eight strokes ahead of Rice (579) and 11 strokes out in front of both Charlotte and Louisiana Tech as the top four teams advance to Match Play to determine the team champion following Wednesday's final round.
"Tomorrow is a new day a new text," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We still have a lot of golf to play, so we are not getting ahead of ourselves. We are just taking it one shot at a time. Again, this is two tournaments in one. If we play our way into match play, everything starts over. However, knowing our team, I like our chances."
After 36 holes senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) hold the team lead in the individual race as they are both tied for 10th with a one-under 143 stroke total. Wilkinson carded a second-round 73, while Dupuy added a 71 help the Golden Eagles keep pace with Florida Atlantic.
Because of their strong rounds, both Latter and Atkins moved into a 15th-place tie with an even-par 144, while sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added a 76 for a 148 total to put him in a tie for 38th place.
"These first two rounds are a prime example of team golf," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "Anything we have a player struggling, we have another one step up and fill the void. This year's team is filled with so much talent and they feed off each other well."
The final 18 holes of regular play starts at 8 a.m., with the Golden Eagles teeing off starting at 9:20 a.m.
