Men’s Golf Uses Solid Back Nine in Opening Day at C-USA Championship to Hold Fourth

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team combined to shoot a seven-under par over the back nine Monday afternoon to hold fourth place following the opening day of the 2022 Conference USA Championships being played at the par 72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Golf Club in Texarkana, Ark.
"The front side of this course is much tougher than the back side," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "I've said it to our guys, if you are standing on seven tee box at par or better, you're doing amazing. The back nine has some holes that are very accessible. Our team did a fine job of staying patient and making a move on the back side."
The 54-hole, three-day event did not get started until around until almost noon due to inclement weather in the area. The teams will continue with 18 holes tomorrow and Wednesday with the top four teams earning a spot in the match play round set for Thursday.
The Golden Eagles trail leader Florida Atlantic (281) by just five, Rice (284) by two and UTSA (285) by one stroke following the first circuit. Southern Miss also finds itself a stroke ahead of UTEP (287) and six strokes better than both North Texas and UAB (292).
"We treat this event like two tournaments," said Brescher. "Stroke play is simply a qualifier for match play. It is great to be in first after stroke play, but honestly it does not matter. You can win stroke play and you still have to start all over come match play. However, our focus is on round two of stroke play. We're taking it one shot at a time."
Senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) shot a two-under 70, going two-under on the back nine, to pace the Golden Eagles and sit in a sixth-place tie.
Freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a one-under 71 as he also enjoyed a two-under through the final nine holes to tie for 12th, while sophomore Thongpipat Rattanyanon (Bangkok, Thailand) overcame a pair of bogeys on the back nine with birdie and an eagle to conclude his day with an even par 72 and a 17th-place tie.
Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) overcame a slow start by finishing with a two-under par over the final nine holes to register a 73 and a tie for 25th. Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) shot an even-par over his final nine holes to card a 75 and a 45th-place tie.
Round two starts at 8 a.m., Tuesday with the Golden Eagles starting off the tee beginning at 8:40 a.m.
