MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team fell in the opening round of the Conference USA Championships on Thursday afternoon. The sixth-seeded Golden Eagles fell to the No. 11 Marshall Thundering Herd, 4-2 to close out the 2022 season.
"I am so proud of our team for competing hard and leaving it all out there," head coach Steve Schram said. "We had our chances, but credit to Marshall for competing very well."
Southern Miss (13-5, 2-2 C-USA) fell in doubles competition, Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel dropped their match on court two and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter fell on court three. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton picked up a victory on court one by a score of 6-2.
Yazgan was defeated by Emma Vanderheyden at No. 1 singles in straight sets, while Richter fell to Marshall's Gabrielle Clairotte. Das battled back after a tough first set to defeat Aisling McGrane in three sets to give Southern Miss its first point of the match.
Burton knocked off Madi Ballow on court three after three hard-fought sets to get within striking distance of the Thundering Herd. Marshall would claim the victory after clinching its fourth point of the match on court two. Tardivel held a 5-0 lead in the third set on court five when play was halted after Marshall's victory.
The Golden Eagles concluded its year with its seventh-consecutive winning season. The Black & Gold entered the C-USA Championships with its highest ranking since 2008 and ended the year with an 8-0 record at home.
Southern Miss ends the year with a strong win percentage in both singles and doubles. The Golden Eagles finished the season winning just under 70 percent of singles contests, highlighted by Tardivel's unblemished 10-0 record. In doubles, the Black & Gold won 33 of 49 matches.
"Overall, we had a tremendous season," Schram said. "This team is constantly improving and reaching new heights."
