HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss track and field picked up victories in six events, while finishing in the top three 20 times over the weekend to cap a successful home meet at the Marshall Bell Track Complex.
"We had so many great performances," said head coach Jon Stuart. "All the way around, I thought our athletes showed up and really performed well to help us get ready for some of our tougher meets the rest of the season.
"I'm so proud of our seniors that we were able to recognize and everything that they've accomplished on and off the track. I know that I'm going to miss, but they continue to move forward and be successful in all phases of their lives."
Marquasha Myers got the meet started in the triple jump with a mark of 42'0.75" to take first and get things rolling on Thursday, while freshman Arianna White joined Myers in the winner's circle, tossing 136'9" in the javelin to win the event. On the men's side in the javelin, sophomore Ty Pridgen matched his PR to take second.
The Golden Eagles picked up a win from Kenia Seals in the women's 100m dash and she would continue to find success, taking second in the 200m. On the men's side, senior Elijah Miller also picked up a pair of top-three finishes, earning third in both the 100m and 200m dash.
Running the 400 meters for the first time, Trinity Benson ran 56.10 to earn silver, while teammate Taylor Harris finished just behind to take third.
In the 400m hurdles, Landon Chalden crossed the line in 53.03 to take second.
Southern Miss got a pair of big performances in the 1,500 with Sandra Szpott running a new PR to take gold in 4:26.17, while graduate Kate Mattox took third.
In her first 5K of the season, Lina May earned second, crossing the line in 17:27.91.
The Golden Eagles found more success in the field events on Saturday, with Myers earning second in the long jump and Fred Moudani picking up a win in the men's shot put.
Southern Miss would get top three performances from all three of its relay teams with the women's 4x100 matching the third fastest time in program history to win the event, and both 4x400 relay teams taking third to close the meet.
The Black and Gold will be back in action next weekend at the Joe May Invitational hosted by LSU.
