Golden Eagles Finish Day One of the Arizona Invitational 0-2

TUCSON, Ariz. – Southern Miss falls in matches against two of the nation's best opponents in No. 17 Arizona and No. 11 Long Beach State.
No. 17 Arizona 5, Southern Miss 0
Coach Taylor's squad started their four-match visit to the Grand Canyon State against the flagship Arizona Wildcats.
Arizona entered the contest 15-8 and having never played Southern Miss. The Sand Cats would make relatively quick work of the Golden Eagles, taking the match in straight sets at all five flights.
Falling first, and giving the Sand Cats their first point of the day, was fifth flight pair Carmen Sanchez Delgado and Kai Norman. This would be the pair's first match together, marking Sanchez Delgado's third appearance at the fives and Norman's 24th.
Sanchez Delgado/Norman dropped their sets 14-21 and 13-21.
Finishing next would be Vanessa Hurnikova and Kellie Garraway. The duo was 7-1 on the year, playing all eight matches at the second position.
Hurnikova/Garraway dropped their first set 12-21 and then followed up with a second set defeat by a margin of 15-21.
Hallie Phelan and Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou took the sand as the fourth pair. The second first-time pairing of the match for Southern Miss.
The pair lost to the Wildcat fours in narrow sets, falling 18-21 and 17-21.
Top flight pair Breleigh Favre and Aleksandra Chudzik fell 9-21 in their first set before forcing extra points in the second set. The top pair fell 21-23 in the pivotal set two, giving Arizona the fourth point of the afternoon.
Favre/Chudzik are now 6-4 as a No. 1 pairing.
Rounding out the match for Southern Miss were third position regulars Taylor Pierce and Olivia Hepworth. Pierce/Hepworth started their 18th match at the flight, entering with a 6-11 record.
The Golden Eagles' threes would not go down without a fight, coming close to clipping the Sand Cats in each of the two sets. Set one was a 19-21 decision and the Sand Cats finished off the sweep with a 21-23 victory of Southern Miss.
Arizona finished the day 2-0 on the court and 10-0 in the score column, defeated Cal State Bakersfield later in the evening. They now lead the all-time series against Southern Miss, 1-0.
No. 11 Long Beach State 4, Southern Miss 1
In a rematch against the Beach, Southern Miss was able to improve from the 5-0 sweep Long Beach State dished out earlier this season.
The Black & Gold would trot out the same lineup against Long Beach State.
Hepworth/Pierce would fall first in two sets by scores of 15-21 and 12-21.
Following the threes, Golden Eagle No. 4 flight Siakidou Papakyriakou/Phelan fell by 17-21 and 11-21, handing the Beach their second point of the afternoon.
At the top pairing, Chudzik/Favre faired slight better against the Beach No. 1s but fell in two sets 16-21 and 17-21.
Garraway/Hurnikova, remaining at the second position, narrowly fell in the first set, 19-21, before dropping the second set by a score of 16-21.
Preventing the Beach sweep, Sanchez Delgado/Norman mustered a near-improbable comeback against the LBSU fifth pair.
The Golden Eagles' fifth position duo dropped their first set 4-21 but would rally to take two consecutive points for the Black & Gold's first point of the day.
Set two was a nail-biting 19-21 showdown and the pair would hang on for a 15-13 victory in the rubber set.
Long Beach State took the match, 4-1, and would finish the day 2-0 after beating Stephen F. Austin earlier in the morning.
