LAFAYETTE, La. – Hunter Riggins tossed a complete-game shutout to lead Southern Miss to a 5-0 non-conference baseball victory over Louisiana here Saturday afternoon at Russo Park.
With the win, the Golden Eagles (7-3) split the weekend series with the Ragin' Cajuns (6-5) as the two teams will play the deciding game of the set, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
Riggins, who threw the first Golden Eagle nine-inning, complete-game shutout since Walker Powell did it against Old Dominion on March 22, 2019, limited the Cajuns to just six singles and a walk.
He gave up a hit in each inning from the second through fifth frames but left one runner at second, got one caught stealing and added two double plays to get out of those frames.
UL's only real threat came in the eighth when they registered a pair of singles, but Danny Lynch made a great defensive play behind the mound to get Bobby Lada out and end the half inning.
Riggins improved to 3-0 on the year as he lowered his ERA to 0.45 and got 14 groundouts in the process. He also fanned five in the contest throwing 100 pitches with 71 for strikes.
Five different Golden Eagles drove in a run in the contest to provide the offense for the visitors as they finished with 10 hits.
Southern Miss produced two runs in the fourth on an RBI groundout from Carson Paetow and a run-scoring double from Rodrigo Montenegro.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Slade Wilks – his second of the game – and a sacrifice fly from Will McGillis. Lynch added a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring in the ninth.
Dylan Theut (0-2), the first of six Ragin' Cajun hurlers suffered the loss by allowing two runs on five hits over 3 2/3 inning with a strikeout and a walk.
Gabe Montenegro led the way with three hits for Southern Miss, while Danny Lynch and Slade Wilks added two each.
It was the first time the Cajuns were shutout since a 1-0 setback to the Golden Eagles on March 13 last season.
