HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team is set to head across the Mississippi-Alabama border for a pair of matches this weekend. The Golden Eagles will first head to Troy on Saturday (11 a.m.) and then close out the Alabama swing at Alabama State on Sunday (11 a.m.).
"This is a big trip for us and both teams are going to provide a challenging match," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I think we have a chance to string something together this weekend and then we'll take that into next weekend when we play another tough opponent."
Southern Miss has dropped its last three matches, including a Conference USA contest to UAB on Feb. 20. The Golden Eagles (2-4, 0-2 C-USA) have five different individuals with two wins, while Shamirul Shahril has posted both of his at No. 2 singles. Shahril picked up a win last match to move his record to 2-2. Shahril has also been a force in doubles play with partner Dhruv Sunish. The two have jumped to a 3-2 record at the top singles spot. Engineer, though, slotted Alexander Gima and Alan Sanson in the top spot against Louisiana last weekend.
Troy (9-6, 0-0 Sun Belt) comes into Saturday's contest riding a one-match winning streak after beating Jacksonville State, 4-3, on Tuesday. The Trojans were tripped up by No. 24 Florida State on Feb. 25, losing 4-3 on the road. They beat Alabama State, Southern Miss' Sunday foe, 7-0 in early February. Pelayo Antuna has paved the way at the top spot for Troy with an 8-3 record at No. 1 singles. Noah Martens and Vito Llinares hold a 5-8 mark at the top doubles spot.
Alabama State (2-4, 2-0 SWAC) is coming of a 4-1 loss to VCU on Feb. 23. The Hornets' two wins came against Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State at the SWAC Pod I Tournament. They play Georgia State today before battling the Golden Eagles on Sunday. Chris Andre sits at 5-5 for Alabama State at No.1 singles, while Assil Boussayri is 10-3 on court three. Ruan Du Preez and Boussayri are 10-5 on the season in doubles play.
