HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss received multi-hit performances from four different Golden Eagles, but could not overcome UAB on Sunday afternoon. The Black & Gold and Blazers battled into extra innings, as Southern Miss dropped the final game of the Conference USA series by a score of 7-6.
Southern Miss matched UAB's offensive output throughout the game, as both teams finished the afternoon with 12 hits. The Golden Eagles (18-15, 1-8 C-USA) recorded double-digit hits in a loss for the third time this season.Â
Natalie Taylor, Destini Brown, Tata Davis and Scout Jennings all recorded a pair of hits. Taylor posted two hits in a game for the second time in her career and batted in two crucial runs for the Golden Eagles.
"It felt good to actually help my team," Taylor said. "It was great to put runs up on the board and just do my job for the team."
The Golden Eagles and Blazers were unable to generate offense through the first two and a half innings. Both squads failed to record a hit and left a runner on base as the score remained tied heading into the bottom of the third.
A double from Taylor opened the bottom of the third for the Golden Eagles, which was followed by a single from Brown. The McComb, Miss. native recorded her 21st steal of the season to improve position, and a fielder's choice from Jana Lee loaded the bases as UAB failed to record a putout.
Davis failed to bring a runner home with a fielder's choice, and the inning came to a close as Hannah Borden struck out swinging. UAB capitalized in the top of the fourth, breaking the scoreless tie with an RBI single to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.Â
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no outs on the board, following walks from Paige Kilgore and Maria Smith and a single from Jennings. Taylor brought home pinch runner Columbia Holeman to tie the game up at 1-1.
Riley Stephens extended the lead with an RBI single, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Brown. Southern Miss took its first lead of the contest into the fifth, as the Golden Eagles held a 3-1 advantage.Â
UAB tied the game with a two-RBI double in the top of the sixth and an RBI single later in the frame gave the Blazers a 4-3 lead. A sacrifice fly from Taylor brought Jennings home, tying the game up at 4-4 heading into the seventh.
Southern Miss allowed its fourth home run of the season, as a two-run shot gave UAB a 6-4 lead as the bottom of the seventh approached. Kilgore cut the lead to one with an RBI single, and a walk with the bases loaded tied the contest. UAB escaped the inning as Southern Miss and the Blazers headed to extra innings for the second time in the series.
A double from the Blazers in the top of the eighth brought home the go-ahead run, as Southern Miss trailed 7-6. The Golden Eagles failed to find an equalizer, falling for the third time in extra innings in Conference USA play.
"I told the team after the game that we're so close to a breakthrough," head coach Brian Levin said. "Little things will hopefully turn this thing around as the year goes on. We just need to keep battling and keep working."
The Black & Gold fell to 31-42 against UAB in the all-time series, suffering a sweep to the Blazers in a regular-season series for the first time since 2015.Â
