
Golden Eagles Sweep Twin Bill Against Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team swept a midweek doubleheader against the Jackson State Lady Tigers on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles took game one of the twin bill by a score of 5-3, and capped off the day with a dominant 11-0 win in five innings.
The Black & Gold racked up six stolen bases through both contests, including five from graduate outfielder Destini Brown. Home runs from Rycca Hinton, Maria Smith and Scout Jennings fueled the Golden Eagles (20-15, 1-8 C-USA) offensively.
In the circle, Morgan Leinstock and Jana Lee recorded complete-game wins, while the Golden Eagles provided plenty of support on offense. Southern Miss outhit Jackson State, 20-10 over the course of both games.Â
"We got a lot of production from a lot of our younger players today, which is always great to see," head coach Brian Levin said. "All in all, it was a good doubleheader. It's great to get the sweep and head home on a happy note."
Game 1: Southern Miss 5, Jackson State 3
The Golden Eagles took game one of the doubleheader, racking up five stolen bases in the process. Southern Miss won the hit battle against the Lady Tigers and overcame an early deficit to improve to 5-3 on the road.
Southern Miss fell behind early, as Jackson State got on the board in the bottom of the first. The Lady Tigers advanced a runner with a single, a stolen base and a wild patch, which Jackson State brought home later in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Both squads were held scoreless in the second and third frames, as the two teams combined for three hits in that span. The Golden Eagles left a pair of runners on base and trailed by one run heading into the top of the fourth.
Hannah Borden reached first with a single to right field to open the fourth and Columbia Holeman entered the contest as a pinch runner. Holeman stole second to improve position, but it would not matter, as freshman Hinton recorded her first home run to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
"I got down on a 3-2 count with a runner on base, and I just saw the ball and I hit it," Hinton said. "We were down 1-0, and it all fell into place. I'm really proud of our team, and it's great knowing that they have my back."
Southern Miss kept Jackson State off the board in the bottom of the fourth, and the Golden Eagles took advantage in the top of the fifth. Brown reached first with a single and recorded her third steal of the contest to move to second. A double from Lee brought home the McComb, Miss. native to increase the lead to 3-1.Â
Pinch runner Lorna Agren reached home in the top of the sixth on a passed ball to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to three runs. Jackson State tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning to cut Southern Miss' lead back to two.
Brown recorded her fourth steal of the afternoon, and Tata Davis brought her home with an RBI single to bring the Golden Eagles' advantage to 5-2. The Lady Tigers picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh, but Southern Miss shut down the comeback attempt. Lee improved to 6-5 on the season and pitched her seventh complete game.
Game 2: Southern Miss 11, Jackson State 0
Southern Miss dominated game two of the doubleheader from the first pitch, as the Golden Eagles run-ruled an opponent for the first time this season. The Black & Gold kept the bats hot through five innings, picking up a 11-0 victory to close out the day.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start, as Davis brought Lee home with an RBI double to open the scoring. Smith recorded her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to extend Southern Miss' lead to 3-0 after the top of the first.
After a scoreless frame from the Lady Tigers, the Golden Eagles notched four runs on the board to take a 7-0 lead. Brown brought Caroline Worrell home on a sacrifice fly for the first run of the inning, and another RBI double from  Davis extended Southern Miss' advantage to five with one out.
Jennings recorded the second home run of her career to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the second. The Golden Eagles kept JSU off the board as the third inning approached.
A double from Lee sent Brown home to extend the lead to 8-0 in the top of the third. Southern Miss added a trio of runs in the top of the fourth to give the Black & Gold an 11-0 advantage.
The Golden Eagles closed out the contest, as Leinstock pitched the 15th complete game of her season and recorded her third shutout in the circle in 2022.
