HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Four Southern Miss men's golfers hold top 10 spots following the opening day of the ECU Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C., to help the Golden Eagles hold first place in the team standings.
Freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) led the way for the Golden Eagles with rounds of 68 and 73 for a three-under par 141 to tie for second at the par 72, 6,830-yard Brook Valley Country Club.
"Our team has been knocking on the door all year long," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "It is nice to see us putting it together and starting to click. Each tournament our guys play such good team golf, which is evident since we never have the same guy as our low player. This team plays some good brother-in-law golf."
Senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) added a 69 and 74 for a one-under 143 to hold a fifth-place tie, while both sophomores Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) each carded rounds of 75 and 70 for a 145 and an eight-place tie.
Sophomore Warwick Purchase (Pretoria, South Africa), who is playing as an individual, posted rounds of 77 and 69 for a 146 and a 13th place tie, senior Hunter Atkins rounded out the Golden Eagle individual scoring with rounds of 75 and 76 to end the day with a 151 and in a 27th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a pair of team rounds of 287 to complete the day with a 574 total. They lead second place Francis Marion by 11 strokes with 18 holes left to play Tuesday.
"Having a sizable lead is nice to start the final round," said Brescher. "However, we are not content. We will continue to play the same game that brought us this lead with the hopes of stretching it even further."
