HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team returned to the Grand Canyon Invitational this week seeking a team tournament crown after finishing second in the squad's debut a year ago.
After racing out to a first-place advantage following the opening round at the par 71, 7,148 GCU Championship Golf Course, the Golden Eagles found themselves just two strokes off the lead when play was suspended due to darkness Monday afternoon with each team having between from two to four holes to complete by each of their players to finish the second round.
Southern Miss used a strong back-nine from its players to jump out in front of the field with a team score of 278. The Golden Eagles finished 14-under-par on the backend of the course to take the early advantage.
"We got off to a slow start on the front nine," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The front nine on this course is much tougher than the back nine. We knew if we could minimize the mistakes on the front, we could bounce back by getting it going on the back nine. And we did just that by firing 14 under as a five-man team."
It was the back nine again that helped the Golden Eagles keep pace in the second round as they featured a minus-7 in the second round with several holes left to play by its squad when the tournament continues Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. CT. The Golden Eagles were just two strokes behind host GCU when play was stopped, sitting at minus-11 overall.
"Sitting two back with twenty holes to play is a great position to be in," said Brescher. "We are confident in our abilities and like where we sit starting the final day. We begin the day with all five guys to play hole 18. Which is the easiest hole on the course. We look to get off to a hot start to begin the day."
After the opening round of play, both sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) each shot a three-under 68 to tie for sixth place after the opening 18 holes. Senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added a 70 for a 15th-place tie, while senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) carded a 72 and sophomore Thongpipat Rattanyanon (Bangkok, Thailand) tallied a 74.
"All five players are above .500 on the field (60th or above) when play was stopped," said Brescher. "This is another tournament where we are showing the depth of our program and how well the guys feed off each other."
