
Softball Defeated by North Texas, 5-4

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team was swept by the North Texas Mean Green, following a 5-4 loss in the final contest of the series on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles recorded six hits and a home run, but a pair of runs in the top of the seventh gave North Texas the win.
The Golden Eagles (17-8, 0-3 C-USA) received another strong offensive performance from graduate outfielder Destini Brown, who recorded two hits, two runs and put herself on base three times. Maria Smith recorded the second home run of her season, a solo shot in the sixth inning.
The Black & Gold were unable to overcome a late surge from North Texas, leading to the team's third-straight defeat. Morgan Leinstock and Jana Lee combined for strikeouts in the circle for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Miss' defense kept North Texas off the board in the top of the first inning, and the Golden Eagles took advantage in the bottom of the frame. Brown opened the inning with a single and a pair of groundouts advanced the McComb, Miss. native to third. Senior Terrica Williams brought Brown home with an RBI single to take the 1-0 lead.
UNT picked up a run in the top of the second on a fielder's choice, and the Golden Eagles were unable to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the inning. Leinstock sent back the final two outs of the third inning with strikeouts, giving Southern Miss an opportunity to retake the advantage.
An RBI single from Tata Davis brought Brown home for her second run of the afternoon, and Columbia Holemen reached home later in the frame on a groundout from Scout Jennings. Southern Miss brought a 3-1 lead into the fourth.
North Texas responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to tie the contest at 3-3. The Golden Eagles left two runners on base in the bottom of the frame and the game remained tied.Â
After a scoreless fifth inning, Smith sent a solo shot over the left field wall to give the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead. Southern Miss was unable to hold on to the lead in the top of the seventh, as North Texas tacked two runs on the board, ultimately sweeping the series after the Golden Eagles could not respond.Â
The Golden Eagles fall to 6-16 in the all-time series against the Mean Green. North Texas improved to 14-4 with the victory and 3-0 in C-USA play.Â
