HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss softball team dropped a midweek tilt to the No. 3/4 Alabama Crimson Tide in front of a record-breaking crowd in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles fought hard against their second top-five foe of the season but fell by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday.Â
The previous Southern Miss Softball Complex attendance record of 1,563 was broken, as 1,571 fans packed the stands on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles (17-9, 0-3 C-USA) matched Alabama's output in hits, with seven, but a pair of errors, combined with timely runs from the Crimson Tide decided the contest.Â
Following a scoreless first inning, an RBI single from Alabama's Morgan Bloodworth gave the Crimson Tide a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles forced a groundout to close the frame, and Southern Miss responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Black & Gold loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second, and freshman Natalie Taylor brought home Hannah Borden and pinch runner Columbia Holeman to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead. Southern Miss left three runners on base, taking a one-run advantage into the third.
After a quiet third frame, Alabama tied the contest up in the top of the fourth with an RBI single up the middle. The Golden Eagles forced a pitching change in the bottom of the inning with two on base, as Alabama ace Montana Fouts entered the circle in relief of Jaala Torrence. However, Southern Miss was unable to reclaim the lead, leaving runners at each corner.
The Crimson Tide took the lead in the top of the fifth with another RBI single, but left two on base, as Southern Miss trailed heading into the bottom of the inning. The Golden Eagles could not knot the game up, as Alabama held a 3-2 lead.
Jana Lee entered the contest for Southern Miss in the circle during the top of the sixth, as Alabama extended its lead to two runs with an RBI sacrifice fly. A scoreless bottom of the inning kept the score at 4-2 heading into the seventh.Â
Alabama put up an insurance run in the top of the seventh and closed out the contest in the bottom of the final frame, picking up the 5-2 win in the process. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-15 against the Crimson Tide in the all-time series, while Alabama improves to 22-2 on the season.Â
